孿生兄弟史蒂芬n(StephennQuay)n和提摩西．奎(TimothynQuay)1947年生於美國賓夕法尼亞州費城近郊，受到費城濃郁的歐洲移民文化氛圍的影響，他們自幼產生對歐洲（尤其東歐）文化的濃厚興趣。

奎氏兄弟原先就讀於賓夕法尼亞藝術大學，1969-72年在倫敦王室藝術學院學習並開始製作短片。1978年，他們在荷蘭住了一段時間後移居倫敦至今，並開始和校友基思．格禮菲斯n(KeithnGriffiths)n合作，成立Koninck工作室，創作特異的停格動畫電影。

出於對捷克動畫大師楊．斯凡克梅耶（JannSvankmajer）的熱愛，奎氏兄弟表現出一種對細節的偏執，對顏色和質地的震撼感，以及鏡頭的怪誕運用無不顯示奎氏電影的特立獨行與易辨認性。那種灰暗陰沈、近乎潛意識與夢魘、且非傳統故事性的影片敘說方式，除了適合倫敦多雨多霧的陰濕天氣外，也明顯承襲自卡夫卡式的狂亂風格。他們構築了一個封閉、內縮、沈寂、且異常精細複雜的世界，在那裡頭日常生活中所不斷重復的支微末節被特寫放大，成為想像力的來源與影片敘說的主線。

他們最著名的作品是1986年改編自Bruno Schultz小說的《鱷魚街》(StreetnofnCrocodiles)，這部浪漫幻想主義傑作給人以強烈的視覺衝擊力。1996年的《班傑明學院》(InstitutenBenjamenta）是奎氏兄弟第一次拍攝真人表演的劇情長片，為幻想主義主題開拓了一個新的層面。

在創作靈感來自晦澀文學或奇思怪想的作品，同時他們還拍攝了一系列音樂錄影短片、廣告和電視宣傳片以及為歌劇擔任舞臺美術設計；另外，他們還參與了電影《揮灑烈愛》(Frida)（動畫製作）和《墜落》(The Falls)（演員）的拍攝。

Graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, the extraordinary Brothers Quay were celebrated for their stop-motion puppet animation. Devotees of the Czech animation maestro Jan Svankmajer, the Quays displayed a passion for detail and preferred creating a miniaturized world on their tiny sets. With implication of Kafka’s absurd style, they tended to express in an unconventional narration and grotesque vision. Apart from animation, they devoted themselves to theater designs, and also contributed to Julie Taymor’s film Frida and pop promos of Coca Cola, MTV, Nikon, etc. The Quays were best known for their classic 1986 film Street of Crocodiles, which filmmaker Terry Gilliam recently selected as one of the ten best animated films of all time.
